Cairns
The Cairns region is one of Australia's largest and most diverse regions. It covers an area of over 378,000 square kilometres from Tully in the south, west to the Gulf and north through the Peninsula & Torres Straits to the Papua New Guinea border. Covering an area the same size as Victoria, the region is rich in natural assets, including the Great Barrier Reef, tropical rainforests of World Heritage significance and mineral, agricultural and fisheries resources.
North Queensland is one of the fastest growing tourist meccas within Australia; being the only place in the world where two World Heritage areas, the reef and rainforest unite.
With over 2 million visitors annually, Cairns has international appeal. It is a small coastal city surrounded by waterfalls, lush rainforest, tropical islands and of course, The Great Barrier Reef. Cairns is the beautiful tropical city cradled between the World Heritage areas of Daintree (approximately 1200 square kilometres in size, the largest continuous tract of this type of forest in the world) and the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, embraces the shores of Cairns. Green, Fitzroy, numerous other islands and virgin sand cays are dispersed throughout this delicate ecosystem. Over 1,500 species of tropical fish make the reef their home amongst thousands of varieties of coral.
Inland from Cairns are the rainforests of the cool and fertile plateau of the Atherton Tableland, some 600 to 1000 metres above sea level.
